Student applications for the Erasmus Mundus Scholarships are open
Learn more about EMIMEP and how to apply for an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship in our Master Study Programme !!!
EMIMEP offers a programme centred on microwave engineering and photonic technologies which ensures that students acquire advanced and cross-disciplinary expertise.
What's new in EMIMEP (formerly EMIMEO) ?
The European Master for Industry in Microwave Electronics and Photonics is the new project funded by the European Union for the period going from 01.09.2023 to 31.10.2029. The project has been granted by the European Commission as a Master study program of Excellence.
The new master will bring some new initiatives and activities compared to EMIMEO. Indeed the Program Committee is still going on to increase the quality of the teaching program for the students and strengthen the connection with the Industries and research Institutes.
Among others, EMIMEP Vs EMIMEO is:
– More targeted students with the Erasmus Mundus Scholarships (05 students editions in EMIMEP vs 04 students intakes in EMIMEO)
– More student positions at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (04 or 05 student mobility per year in the second academic year vs 02 in EMIMEO)
– More international associated partners for more job engineers and PhD opportunities for the students after EMIMEP and internships during the master’s studies (16 large enterprises, 11 SMEs, 15 Research Institutes, 2 associations, 1 Youth Associations, 3 Representatives of working life and 2 national bodies)
– More associated partners from academia: 05 in EMIMEP vs 01 in EMIMEO
– More academic integration between the universities: One course taught by the University of the Basque Country at the University of Limoges in the first semester and one course from the University of Jena will be taught in the second semester at the University of Brescia.
– EMIMEP aim to have a joint diploma not only with the University of Limoges, the University of Brescia, the University of the Basque Country but also with the University of Jena)
– Summer School organised in the associated partner institutions for the student at the end of the student academic year.
The students will continue to attend Research and Industrial Week in Cluj during the first academic year and the European Microwave Week at the beginning of the second academic year (Paris in 2024, Utrecht in 2025, London in 2026).
EMIMEP has been selected by the European Commission in the framework of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJM) 2023 call
The project’s partners are the University of Limoges (UNILIM, France), the University of Brescia (UNIBS, Italy), the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU, Spain) and the Abbe School of Photonics at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena (FSUJena, Germany). The consortium is waiting for approval from the Erasmus+ Agency.
Find more information about Erasmus Mundus by clicking on the website. The associate partner University of Cluj-Napoca (Romania) will also contribute to the learning programme. A panel of industrial & Research Associated Partners, including SMEs, large accompanies and associations, Research Institutes, National bodies, Youth association and representatives of the working life, support the EMIMEP programme through concrete contributions. They will constitute an effective network for Master’s theses with the prospect of future career development.
EMIMEP project is one of these educational projects which will boost the attractiveness of science, technology and engineering
In the context of increasing demand for research and industrial applications around these topics, EMIMEP Masters is a concrete solution to improve the number of highly qualified students.
Electromagnetic waves at microwave or optical frequencies, after emission by circuits or light sources, propagate in free space or in waveguides and are then finally detected. Their high frequencies make them perfect information carriers for high-speed communications, and light-wave based technologies are at the core of the twin transitions required to provide the coming digital decade with sustainable solutions.
The academic subjects will include innovative elements to provide the students with advanced knowledge of the most updated and cutting-edge technologies.
The master’s degree curriculum, besides classical subjects, will include modules on recent advances in bidimensional materials like graphene, meta-surfaces, lasers and frequency combs, quantum technologies, energy harvesting, nanoelectronics, nanophotonics, and high-energy physics for new biomedical applications. These modules, based on scientific breakthroughs from the last twenty years (some of them awarded the Nobel Prize), exemplify the transformative power of physics on engineering and related industrial applications.

EMIMEP represents an innovative educational experience through a set of student mobilities
EMIMEP is organized around a first propaedeutic year where all students will be together at the University of Limoges (UNILIM) for the first semester and at the University of Brescia (UNIBS) for the second semester, promoting group cohesion and a sense of belonging.
During the second year, the students, with the same basic knowledge acquired during the M1, can choose from four possible paths at UNILIM, UNIBS, UPV/EHU, and FSU. The fourth semester is fully centred around the master’s thesis. During the two-year programme, a series of invited lecturers will complete the educational offer of EMIMEP both in the form of seminars of visiting scholars and in the form of focus schools such as the Research and Industrial Week in Cluj-Napoca or the summer school at the end of the programme.
EMIMEP strongly increases professional perspectives for the learners.
Training courses for students in microwave electronics and photonics are of fundamental importance to prepare them for future job and PhD vacancies of the next 5-10 years in the following key joint areas.
The experience-based and skills-based innovative teaching methodologies that will be activated for the master will also expedite the advanced training of young engineers and young research scientists, preparing them to candidate in competitive industrial vacancies or PhD positions: note that all partner universities have associated PhD programme and the EMIMEP Master fits perfectly within their internationalisation strategies.
The employability of the graduates will then be reinforced thanks to the skills acquired by the rather unique interdisciplinary EMIMEP training in Europe. Students can have facilitated access to the many jobs and PhD offers made available within the consortium and can also follow a series of initiatives of the different partners coordinated by the joint nature of the programme.
EMIMEP graduate students can be recruited directly by companies or pursue a PhD programme in universities, research institutes or industrial doctorates.
