Seminar « Thermal Energy Harvesting Systems: Design, Challenges and Opportunities » by Prof. André Pereira (Porto University)

Prof. André Pereira (Physics and Astronomy Department, Faculty of Sciences, Porto University, Portugal) delivered a seminar entitled « Thermal Energy Harvesting Systems: Design, Challenges and Opportunities » on Monday 20 November 2023 from 14:00 to 15:30 at the University of Limoges.

Abstract. Thermal energy harvesting systems represent a promising avenue for sustainable energy generation, offering the potential to harness otherwise wasted heat sources from various industrial processes and natural environments. This paper delves into the design principles, challenges, and opportunities associated with thermal energy harvesting systems.

The design aspect encompasses various technologies and materials used in converting thermal gradients into usable electrical power, highlighting the importance of efficiency and scalability. Challenges, on the other hand, revolve around optimizing system performance, managing temperature differentials, and overcoming material limitations.

Despite these challenges, the opportunities presented by thermal energy harvesting are substantial. From powering remote sensors and IoT devices to reducing energy consumption in industrial settings, or even for wireless energy transfer these systems have the potential to revolutionize energy sustainability.

This paper provides a comprehensive overview of thermal energy harvesting systems, offering insights into their design intricacies, addressing key challenges, and illuminating the vast possibilities that lie ahead in the pursuit of efficient and eco-friendly energy solutions.
