Seminar « Application of machine learning techniques to enhance data interpretation from microwave sensors » by Prof. Javier Alonso Valdesueiro (Polytechnic University of Catalonia)
Prof. Javier Alonso Valdesueiro delivered a seminar entitled « Application of machine learning techniques to enhance data interpretation from microwave sensors » on November 7th, 2024 and November 08th, 2025
Abstract. As part of the “Sensors and Sensor Networks” course, Professor Javier Alonso conducted a 10-hour hands-on seminar focused on the application of machine learning techniques to enhance data interpretation from microwave sensors. During the activity, students received practical training on how to design and train a neural network, and how to implement it in a microcontroller-controlled environment to improve sensor performance. One of the key experiments involved detecting different concentrations of a solute in liquid by analyzing the scattering parameters obtained from a planar microwave sensor.
This activity provided students with valuable experience in combining RF sensing technologies with modern data processing techniques.
Bio. Javier Alonso Valdesueiro is a professor in the Department of Electronic and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Barcelona. He received his Engineering degree from the University of Alcalá, Madrid, in 2006, and his Ph.D. from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Barcelona, in 2011. From 2012 to 2019, he developed electronic instrumentation for NMR experiments at various institutions, including the C.E.A Center in France, the University of Southampton, and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) under a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship. Currently, he works at the University of Barcelona, focusing on research in novel RF hardware and methodologies, electronic instrumentation, and sensing technologies for harsh conditions.
