EMIMEO Summer School at the Abbe School of Photonics

The Abbe School of Photonics in Jena (Germany) proudly hosted the highly anticipated EMIMEO Summer School from August 26 to August 30, 2024. This vibrant event brought together over 70 participants, including students, researchers, and professionals from around the world, for a week of intensive learning, collaboration, and cultural exchange.

The Summer School offered a dynamic program featuring Master’s thesis presentations, scientific talks, and hands-on workshops. Participants explored advanced topics in photonics, ranging from microwave radar technologies to quantum metamaterials, thanks to the diverse expertise of our esteemed guest speakers. A particular highlight was the practical workshops held at the Lichtwerkstatt Makerspace, where students engaged in innovative projects like laser cutting and 3D printing.

We were especially delighted to welcome a large number of international participants from countries such as Brazil, Ethiopia, India, Spain, and many more. Among the highlights was the visit of a delegation from Karazin Kharkiv National University in Ukraine, a valued partner institution in the program. The diverse backgrounds of attendees enriched the event, fostering a vibrant exchange of ideas and perspectives that greatly enhanced the experience. Many participants praised Jena’s hospitality and modern facilities, expressing how welcomed and comfortable they felt during their stay.

Beyond its academic offerings, the Summer School provided abundant opportunities for networking and cultural exchange. Highlights included a guided tour of the ZEISS facilities, a scenic hike to Friedensberg, and various social events, such as a student barbecue and a farewell dinner at the traditional brewery restaurant Papiermühle. These activities not only showcased the charm and culture of Jena but also helped participants forge lasting connections.

We take great pride in the success of this year’s EMIMEO Summer School and extend our gratitude to all the speakers, organizers, and participants for their enthusiasm and contributions. We eagerly look forward to continuing this tradition of excellence and fostering a global community in microwave electronics and photonics. The next Summer School is scheduled for 2025 and will take place in one of the EMIMEP partners.
