Seminar « planar microwave sensors » by Prof. Paris Velez (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona)

Professor Paris Velez (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) delivered a seminar on planar microwave sensors at the University of the Basque Country in the third semester of the academic year 2024-2025.

Abstract. Professor Paris Vélez, along with Professor Ferran Martin, both from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, conducted a 20-hour seminar on planar microwave sensors. This seminar/workshop was offered to third-semester students at UPV/EHU as part of the “Sensors and Sensor Networks” course from November 27, 2024 to November 29, 2024 Professor Martín covered the theoretical aspects, including operating principles, sensor types, and design techniques. Meanwhile, Professor Vélez handled the practical sessions, where students designed two planar sensors using Keysight Technologies’ 2D electromagnetic simulator, Momentum.

For students, gaining practical experience with microwave sensors, whose use and applications are rapidly expanding, is highly beneficial. Additionally, having the opportunity to learn from two of the world’s leading experts in this field, Professors Ferran Martín and Paris Vélez, co-authors of the recent book “Planar Microwave Sensors” published by Wiley, adds immense value to their education. We received very positive feedback from the students.

Bio. Professor Paris Vélez was born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1982. He received his degree in Telecommunications Engineering, specializing in Electronics, his degree in Electronic Engineering, and his Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) in 2008, 2010, and 2014, respectively. He is currently a member of the GEMMA-CIMITEC research group at UAB, where he focuses on high-frequency electronics and metamaterials. He is also the co-author, along with Professor Ferran Martín, of the book “Planar Microwave Sensors” published by Wiley in 2022.
