Seminar « Addressing Gender-Based and Sexual Violence : Legal Frameworks and Institutional Resources » by Laura Pereira-Diogo (OBVSS)

Laura Pereira-Diogo (Observatoire des Violences Sexuelles et Sexistes dans l’Enseignement Supérieur, France) delivered a seminar on Thuesday 14 January 2025 entitled « Addressing Gender-Based and Sexual Violence : Legal Frameworks and Institutional Resources » at the University of Limoges.

Abstract. This seminar aims to provide participants with the legal tools to identify situations of gender-based and sexual violence, with a particular focus on understanding consent. It will equip attendees with practical guidance on how to react appropriately, whether as a witness or as someone close to a victim, while respecting their needs and choices. The session is designed to be inclusive and considerate, avoiding personal stories or graphic depictions to ensure accessibility for everyone, regardless of their experiences.

Objectives:

  • Legally identify situations of gender-based and sexual violence (legal definitions with examples)
  • Learn how to react and redirect victims to the resources available in the institution (how to act as a witness)

The Observatoire des Violences Sexuelles et Sexistes dans l’Enseignement Supérieur (Observatory of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in Higher Education) is a national inter-departmental student association. Our aim is to combat sexist and sexual violence in higher education, in particular through surveys that enable us to assess the extent of such violence. We believe that in order to break the cycle of violence, it is essential for all stakeholders (establishments, associations and institutions) to get involved.
