Seminar « Laser-based inertial fusion – opportunities and challenges for optical technologies » by Dr. Martin Traub (Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology, Aachen).
Dr. Martin Traub (Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology, Aachen). delivered a seminar entitled « Laser-based inertial fusion – opportunities and challenges for optical technologies » on February 18th, 2025.
Abstract. Laser-based inertial fusion promises breakthroughs in energy and scientific research. This seminar highlights the role of advanced optical technologies in high-power laser systems, precision beam delivery, and diagnostics, addressing the key challenges of energy density, component durability, and real-time control.
Bio. Dr. Traub studied mechanical engineering and industrial engineering at RWTH Aachen University and Michigan State University. He subsequently earned his doctorate at the RWTH Aachen Institute for Laser Technology on the topic of « Generation of process-adapted power density distributions for laser material processing, » while working as a research associate at the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT. For over 15 years, he has headed the « Optics Design and Diode Lasers » group at the ILT. The group’s activities focus on the design of imaging and non-imaging optical systems, beam shaping for high-power lasers and quantum computing, as well as the development of diode laser pumping systems, e.g., for space applications, secondary sources, and laser-based inertial fusion.
